Hawaii Post: Run and Gun from the iPhone (Part 1)

Back in August my dad and I went to the Big Island of Hawai'i.

Sometimes it's just best to use a PnS when you

don't have the time to setup a DSLR, tripod and gear.

The iPhone 4 has been an amazing little run and gun camera for me,

especially when I want to remember a scene for reference to

later revisit and get "the shot!"

Not much to look at after the sun goes down

As soon as we arrived in Hilo it was pouring rain.

Not the Hawai'i rain I was used too, but a drenching downpour.

Apparently it was going to last for the next 2 days straight from a

tropical storm that broke up before it hit the island.

I awoke early the next day and this flower was outside of our hotel.

By the time I went back with my DSLR to capture this shot,

the water droplet on the stigma had fallen.

Glad I captured it with my PnS.

I love the root system of the Banyan trees.

A local friend of mine "Joe Arce" showed us around the island to

some hot spots the first day we were in Hilo.

Mainly waterfalls and local surf areas.

It's always nice to have a local around especially when

all Caucasians are considered Haole's.

We didn't get your normal view of Akaka Falls due to the pouring

rain and thick mist creating a very ominous atmosphere.

I love the philosophy behind this sign seen

at Volcano's National Park.

Weekend trip to Horse Pens 40, AL for an upcoming Urban Climber Issue

I got back from a killer trip to HP40 about 2 weeks ago have been diligently editing/writing for an upcoming "Life List" article in a future Urban Climber Mag Issue. The Life List will be similar to the one I did on the Red River Gorge in a previous issue.

The photos below are to present more of the run and gun aspect of my trip with a great crew of friends, mainly all shot with my iPhone.

People have been asking me about prints and until recently

I wasn't having any of my photographs printed...until now.

This is the first of many to be printed.

This was taken on my recent trip to The Big Island of Hawaii.

This area is at South Point and is the Southern

most tip of the United States. Green Sand Beach (Papakolea Beach)

is a 2.5-3mi hike or drive only if you have a

4wheel-drive vehicle and can drive well.

A collaboration piece with Artist/Painter Justin Vining

After I returned home from my shoot in Indianapolis with

Justin Vining, we started talking about doing a

collaboration piece together. Ideas were flying across

the span of cell-phone waves as we chatted.

Below is the first idea that we came up with and executed.

We decided that I would go shoot a scene (somewhat simliar)

to his paintings and then Justin would add his touch to the printed photograph.

Title: "Kentucky Skies"

Description: This is a collaboration between myself and Justin Vining.

I shot the photo somewhere in rural KY and Justin then painted

Portrait session with Indianapolis Painter: Justin Vining

Long time climbing friend of mine, Justin Vining

recently made the leap from being a lawyer to chasing

his dream of being a full-time painter/artist.

It had been about 4 years since we've been able to hang out,

so last week I drove up to Indianapolis, IN

where he now lives and paints out of

Studio 654 (his studio space) in Broad Ripple.

Justin used to teach elementary art on the Northeast

side of Indianapolis, IN in Pendleton.

Justin can also complete the Rubix Cube in record setting times

ie. 20sec or less

Justin has a very unique style to his paintings,

almost reminiscent of the movie Beetlejuice.

Chris is aprx. 70-80ft (in this shot) off the ground forgoing

any ropes or safety equipment as he climbs using only brute

strength, skill, chalk and shoes as his dog "Lucifer" waits for him

at the base. A climber who free-solo's without gear has to either

top out or down climb the route. Once Chris got to the top,

he then down climbed the route.

I spent the last part of August on The Big Island of Hawaii.

The Big Island offers a variety of every environment

from luscious jungles to beaches, snow tipped mountains,

active volcano's, lava fields, grass lands and elevation changes

from sea level to 13,976ft/4000m in about a 90min drive.

I have always loved the skies, stars, galaxies, etc.

Here are a few images I really dug of the milky way:

To Die Like A Gentleman by: Damian Gerlach

A childhood friend of mine, Damian Gerlach

just published his third book titled,

"To Die Like A Gentleman."

Damian came to me to shoot his portrait for this book and his only requirement was that he wanted it in Black and White. Other than that, I had free reign to shoot how I saw fit for the situation.

Oh yeah and he wanted a beer in his hand - haha!

We picked a local restaurant/bar called Eiderdown in his home area of Germantown in Louisvillle, KY where Damian grew up a few streets away from Eiderdown. I thought the wood tables and brick would make create a really nice texture for a BnW image.

This is my favorite one but we're not trying to promote Sprite, so the

Matisyahu's performance at Ear-X_tacy Live

He also ended up doing a "free" acoustic set and signing at

famous local record store Ear-X-tacy.

My main focus was to enjoy his music, but I figured

So in a period of Blacked Out New Years Eve fun in the woods with an entourage of my climbing buddies at Rocktown, GA someone ( prolly me ) fell into the side of my Element creating a decent sized elbow/wrist dent.

Immediately I shot an iPhone image of it and sent it to my buddy Gavin Reherman at ACUDENT and he replied, "Don't worry. Hit me up when you get back in town. That's an easy fix!"

A couple weeks after returning home our schedules coincided

and we met up for the fix.

The day before, I received a call from Gavin saying he's making a

commercial showcasing how they fix dents using my car and if it's cool to do so.

I agreed!

Gavin's brother is Lee Reherman.

If any of you watched American Gladiators between 1993-1996,

Lee was better known as "Hawk."

Lee has now moved on to being and actor and a talk show host. He is currently hosting speed networks "Battle of the Super Cars."

Lee and Battle of the Super Cars also helped out with the commercial for Acudent.

Re-route to Max Patch, NC

On my way to Chattanooga I got a call from Spencer Victory telling me that I had to stop by his crib in Knox and head out to Max Patch with him the following day. I'm always down for whatever life throws at me and apparently the bald got 24-30inches of fresh pow pow.

I have never skied, snowboarded or been in the mountains for that matter with that much snow, so I was psyched to get there.

Looking at Sharpening & Noise Reduction in CS5

I recently upgraded to CS5 and have noticed some amazing features. One of the newest features that I have found to be very helpful has been the Sharpen/Noise Reduction in Camera Raw 6.

The key factor under the sharpening tab is the "Masking" slider.

This now enables the artist to easily create a mask so we can sharpen parts of the image that need to be sharpened while not touching other aspects such as a

sky where we only want noise reduction.

Here are is an example of an image I recently reworked to test the difference in this feature:

You can see I have dragged the masking slider most

of the way to the right to a set point of 90.

A key feature with this is to hold down "option"

on a mac while dragging the slider.

This enables the user to only see a black and white image of the layer mask so you can fine tune what you what masked.

In this example you can see the before and after preview of the image.

The image on top has a really nice gradient of noise reduction while keeping the sharpness and detail in the bridge and buildings.

The sky on the image below is very noisy and would not look good if printed at 100%.

"Big Show" MMA fight at the Belterra with Eric Gifford

Eric Gifford is a sponsored climbing athlete with companies like:

La Sportiva, Revolution Climbing & MTN Ranks.

I've had the pleasure of being friends/climbing partners

with Eric for a decade now.

We've traveled many places throughout the years in search of rock.

Every-time Eric fell in love with a destination he would move there,

dominate the area then choose a new destination.

We would lose touch intermittently through the years, but like true family, no matter the obstacle we would always reunite like no time had passed, relive and create new memories.

I look forward to more climbing roadtrips with him

once my injury has fully healed.

We have both suffered spine injuries and Eric has

proven to me that through time,

anything can be achieved despite what doctors may say.

"Mind over matter"

Eric picked up Mixed Martial Arts about a year and a half ago after

moving to Cincinnati and now has 3 fights under his belt.

I finally got to show up for the most recent fight at the

Belterra Casino and show support for my brother.

Here are some shots from this past weekends fight!

Falls of the Ohio

Gorgeous weather and increases gas prices led me to an area very close to home this past Sunday with a friend of mine. We just wandered around and chatted for most of the day, but I did end up shooting a few shots.

"During the Middle Devonian, the Falls of the Ohio fossil beds region was covered by a shallow, tropical sea located some 30 degrees south of the equator. Evidence of potent tropical storms is visible because all but the largest corals and stromatoporoids have been jumbled around. While the organisms are different, the Jeffersonville Limestone ecosystemis comparable to a patch reef ecosystem in Florida Bay or the Bahamas today."

Showcase Cinema

Growing up as a child in the late 80's, early 90's this was the place to go hang out. Best place to watch movies, play video games, etc. It has been abandoned for quite some time now and they have finally begun the demolition phase on the building/property.

I was driving by there the other day when I noticed that if I didn't get photo's of it now, I never would be able too.

Who knows what will go there or if anything will in the near future...

...and this is my favorite!

My Life as a Mail-Order Bride: Oksana Makarova

Back in July I got a call from Redux Agency asking me if I wanted to assist a photographer who was flying into Louisville, KY to shoot a portrait session to accompany an article for Marie Claire. I thought this would be a great learning opportunity to work with another photog.

That photog ended up being Melissa Golden, who was a pleasure to work with.

Melissa Golden is a photographer who has been based in the D.C. area mainly shooting for The Wall Street Journal and works with quite a few politicians. Melissa is moving to Los Angeles in the near future, so look for her on the west coast.

The article I assisted Melissa on just came out in this months issue of Marie Claire and is now available online.

We worked with a woman originally from the Ukraine named Oksana Makarova. It's about her struggle as a mail-order bride, coming to the states for a brighter future for her son, being "domesticated" and her struggle to break free from those issues and create a life for herself in the states.

The annual Zombie walk in Louisville was this past Sunday evening.

Zombie's littered the streets of the Highlands.

Bardstown road was shut down as zombies

slowly dragged through and watched a band

perform horror songs in the street.

Shoot for Marie Clare and Forecastle Festival

Sunday July 11th, 2010 was an amazing day.

Assisted a shoot for editorial "Marie Clare"

with photog: Melissa Golden.

The portrait shots will be seen in either the

Oct or Nov issue of Marie Clare.

I'll post an update when that issue is out and online.

Assisting on this shoot was an avenue of new beginnings. No ropes to set up. No hiking. Not dealing with the elements of Mother Nature. Gave me a different perspective. I suggested that any inspiring photog should assist others. There is always something you can learn from any given situation and take that knowledge with you to apply in the future.

After the shoot, I rushed down to the Louisville waterfront for a glimpse of "She & Him" (Zooey Deschanel & M.Ward).

Ended up having a really nice dinner at Proof on Main.

If you have never eaten here, this restaurant is a must stop in downtown Louisville.

After dinner, I rushed back to the waterfront to attempt to get a cheaper ticket to see "The Flaming Lips." As soon as I approached the gate, I saw my buddies from the RRGCC (Red River Gorge Climbers Coalition).

Thanks to Burton, I found my way in to see the Lips for "free."

I've never seen The Flaming Lips, but have heard great things about their shows. Wayne Coyne came out in the Hamster ball and crowd surfed during the intro.

Confetti & balloons were floating all over the crowd.

These guys can put on a damn good show.

Peace signs were held by all to honor those in war.

I will definitely be seeing them again!

Victory Productions started filming this past weekend for the Fall 2010 Reel Rock Film Tour.

Usually, I'm taking behind the scenes shots for his films, but this year I was asked to play a role in the film, which coincidentally enough made me shoot some photos during the filming. Most of the images below are shot from actual scenes while filming.

I picked up Joe from the Louisville airport Friday afternoon and we went and grabbed some beers from the local microbrewery Cumberland Brews in the Highlands. After throwing back a few pints we walked to the Why Louisville store ( A place to get all local memorabilia ) and went across the street to Leatherhead. The best damn place to get any leather work done. Nick has made products for Hunter S. Thompson, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, The Judds and more. Hunter S. Thompson actually grew up down the street from where the store is now located.

We had to stop at the local liquor store and pick up some tasty bourbon for the festivities this weekend. I ended up with a Litre of Buffalo Trace and Joe got a single barrel bottle of Wathens.

Now to head to the gorge...

An injury and the repercussions I've dealt with since July 09'

It's not that I have been slacking off with my photography, but have been for quite some time now unable to shoot due to an injury I sustained in mid-July 2009 which resulted in a brain-stem concussion and issues with my cervical & thoracic spine. For legal reasons, I can not say how this incident happened, but I am happy to let everyone know that it was not in any way "climbing" related.

A brief history:

My diagnosis went unknown for about 2-3 months until I was able to finally see a neurologist and they were able to get an MRI of my brain and c-spine. I slept about 18-20 hours a day during that time. My concussion symptoms finally left me around Nov/Dec. Since then, I have been battling different musculoskeletal and nerve issues throughout the right side of my body, which keeps me from holding a camera and lugging around equipment. I am still unable to perform these tasks, but am finally feeling that I am on the right path of healing with my current Holistic healer, Neuromuscular Therapist & Acupuncturist. I owe everything to these 3 people that have helped me when the Western Doctors "told me that this is something I'm just going to have to live with."

I will be traveling to see an Osteopath in June.

I can't wait to get back on the road, kick it with old friends, shoot and climb and regain my old lifestyle that I've had to deviate from this past year.

My favorite artist/painter "Alex Grey" and his wife were in a serious car accident last week.

Snow storm in iglouisville...

Finally got the snow storm I had been hoping for this year.

A group of us got together and created an iglou that housed

13 bourbon drinkers and a dog from the sub-zero temps that night

in a fictional land titled, "iglouisville."

The snow actually accumulated a bit in the Ohio Valley this past weekend.

I was able to get out and shoot some trail running shots

with Carl Bakanowski for about 2 hours.

Cheyenne is getting ready to come out with her new solo EP and hit the road in February 2010 for a few months performing with Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore while promoting her new album.

Last May Cheyenne teamed up with Bonnie Prince Billy

to release a 7" vinyl titled, "Among the Gold"

consisting of six love songs from the 19th Century era.

You can hear two of the songs here:

"Let me call you Sweetheart" & "Only a Dream."

People who know Cheyenne Mize as a fiddle player will be surprised to hear her play multiple instruments on the album.

She may just be a "Jane of all trades..."

Jim James & Daniel Martin Moore's Mountaintop Removal Benefit Show @ 21C

I would like to preface this by saying:

"I did not end up shooting that many photographs of the show this evening. In a crowd of aprx. 300, there were probably 1/3 or more with cameras. Most of whom were shooting "in my opinion" excessively, especially with flashes. I can only imagine how distracting it was for the speakers and musicians to deal with this throughout the entire show. There was one person in particular that felt the need to shoot at a rate of 5-7 fps for a period of 3-5 sec each time he wanted to take "a" shot. I understand that is a way of getting "the shot," but for real this isn't football. People paid good money to "enjoy" the speakers and music not to hear camera shutters and be blinded by flashes every other second. I'm just saying, it would be nice if a photographer would get the shot and step back to enjoy the performance as well."

Anyways... Enough of my ranting.

Moon Halo | Moon Ring

I was heading home the other night on Dec. 1st and saw the

beautiful phenomenon of the moon halo up in the sky.

I quickly ran in the house grabbed my equipment and

was able to get these two shots before it dissipated.

I remember there being a superstition/folklore to the event.

This is what I was able to find about it:

When there is a ring around the moon bad weather usually follows within about 24-48 hours. This is because the halo or ring around the moon is caused by millions of tiny ice particles that form high in the upper atmosphere. The effect is produced because the crystals are scattering the moonlight by diffracting the light through their little hexagonal prisms. These ice crystals generally form in thin cirrus clouds that normally precede a warm front by one or two days. Typically, a warm front will be associated with a low pressure system which is commonly referred to as a storm.

A resident of Louisville Kentucky, the freelance photographer Dan Lubbers (danlubbers.com) discovered climbing eight years ago, after a visit to the local gym. A creative mind and a love of the arts have ushered Lubbers, 29, into photojournalism, landing him jobs shooting everyone from Jason Kehl, to the Icelandic band L.B.H. Krew, to fashion models. "Photography/videography is always something I've created to some degree," Lubbers says "I started to approach it as a career path in the past year and a half." His evocative Perspective portrait of the New Mexico shredder Timy Fairfield (p.90), shirtless, was taken after five weeks in a van with Fairfield as part of the La Sportiva Solutions tour in 2007. The dark, high-contrast shot aptly captures Fairfield's intense personality. "We shot it in a field at night in the Red River Gorge," recalls Lubbers. "It took maybe 45 minutes-it was mid-November and cold!" Lubbers' work has appeared in Climbing, Iceland Airwaves, and Urban Climber Magazines.

I am proud to say that the video I assisted on and shot the photographs for "Spraylords" by Victory Productions was the winner of the Humor category.

I am also excited that Timy Fairfield's video "Do What You Like" by Nathan Bancroft won the category for Inspiration.

My personal favorite "Pose Age 38" won the Judges Choice Award.

Apparently I suffered a concussion to my brain stem mid-July. Needless to say, I haven't really been able to shoot much or do anything else for that matter.

I'm fascinated with anatomy and my neurologist suggested that I get an MRI of my brain.

Figured I would take some images and create an animation with them in photoshop to amuse myself and get over my boredom of cabin fever of resting for the past month and a half.

Last week between trips from the Red River Gorge to Key West/Miami I had a few hours one evening to shoot with model Ashley Holt.

I picked her up and we drove up US 42 looking for the perfect location.

We'd pass a farm and say, "nope" or "maybe" and kept on driving.

We reached Skylight, Ky and saw the shed that is featured here in these images and thought it would be perfect.

Below are a few out-take shots and a diagram of lighting for those interested.

Lilly Sessions Portrait Montage

This past weekend I met up with Daniel Woods at the Lilly Boulders, TN in hopes that he was going to repeat James Litz's unrepeated "Chinese Arithmetic" V13/14.

Woods got the 2nd ascent of this problem on his third try.

This kid is a beast. Woods then came back for the shoot at midnight and did it again first go.

A good time was had by all that night and here is a quick portrait montage I edited of the peeps that were there til dawn.

Supposedly this place is haunted and every fall there are tours throughout

the abandoned structure.

to maintain sanity.

I delve into photography, sculpture, clayboard, music, etc...

Scratchboard is probably the most tedious form of artwork that I do,

but for some odd reason I find

a bit of solace when working in this medium.

I haven't worked in scratchboard in a long-time,

but ran across my archive of ones I had created in the past.

Austin Miller - Chimney Sweeper for Ash Wednesday

My Grandfather is hilarious. He dropped by my house the other night

to celebrate Ash Wednesday. He dressed up as an Old Timey Chimney Sweeper.

Greg Martins Gym Wins 1st - Muscatatuck, IN

I shot some images for Greg Martin of his awesome barn bouldering gym.

They were taken so he could hopefully win some holds from the contest
held in UCmag's Home Gym Contest.

I'm happy to say that Greg won 1st place and got
a Stomach Feature by Soillholds.

This guy Wayne Martin Belger makes his own cameras for specific photoshoots.

Third Eye Camera

Designed to study the beauty of decay.

4”x5” camera made from Aluminium, Titanium, Brass, Silver, Gem Stones and a 150 year old skull of a 13 year old girl. Light and time enters at the third eye, exposing the film in the middle of the skull.

Morbid? Depends on your perspective.
Creative? Most definitely.

Reminds me of the band "TOOL" & the painter "Alex Grey."
I am a big admirer of both of these artist!

Shooting last week with Joe and Colette was a great experience. They are two of the most down to earth climbers I've worked with. Probably because our personalities meshed well together. Hanging with them reminded me of most of the people that I had grown up with. Even though I haven't known them that long, it seems as though our souls had known each other in a previous life.
